The Devices of a Casual User

My Sony Alpha 6400

I am not a spec-oriented sort of guy. Detail-oriented, certainly, and nit-picky when it suits me.

Currently, I am on my fourth digital camera. The first was a Nikon COOLPIX 995, I believe. Probably got that around 2001, but rarely took out of my room.

Following that was the handy Nikon COOLPIX S610, which I picked up in 2008. I would likely still be using today, if the battery hadn’t stopped holding a charge (around 2015).

Around late 2012, I invested in a Sony NEX-5N. The draw was the small body with a massive, changeable lens. It has all sorts of features, but I keep it on “dumb” mode. I know how to use a legit, manual, film camera… but mostly by feel with physical dials. I didn’t learn all the weirdly placed digital menus on the NEX-5N. I started to play around with some settings in 2017, but nothing extreme. I did enjoy it’s High Contrast B&W setting, though. However, I had to retire this camera in 2023 due to dead pixels and other sensor-related issues.

I’ve been enjoying the Alpha 6400, more-so after I figured out how to adjust the white balance mute the focus “chime”. I miss using the NEX-5N lens, but that might work on this camera (just been too scared to try).

Other pictures come from my smartphone – a Samsung Galaxy S5, then S8, and now S20-FE – because I always have it with me. No shame, no elitism.
